Replacing BPA

The BPA replacement platform

The EU has banned BPA in food-contact materials. The polycarbonate and epoxy resin markets built on it are worth around $40 billion combined, and they need a replacement. Teysha is developing one, BVX, and has filed material patent applications for it worldwide.

01

Bisphenol A: A Documented Health Concern

Bisphenol A is one of the highest-volume chemicals in production: the building block of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins used in food and drink can linings, kitchenware, coatings and consumer products. Regulators have acted: EFSA cut the tolerable daily intake twenty-thousand-fold in 2023, and Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 has banned BPA in food-contact materials, with the main transition deadline passed in July 2026.

02

Regulation of the Bisphenol Class

Common substitutes, including BPS and BPF, show similar endocrine activity: the pattern regulators call regrettable substitution. Of 148 bisphenols assessed by the European Chemicals Agency, 34 were found to warrant restriction. The law is closing on the class, which is why genuinely non-bisphenol chemistry is the compliant path.

03

Patent protected

BVX, Teysha's BPA replacement, is protected by material patent applications filed worldwide. It builds on the KarmaCane platform, which is protected by granted material patents and licensed to Teysha worldwide.

04

The Teysha programme

Teysha's next-generation platform targets direct replacement of BPA in food-contact and industrial applications: natural polycarbonates built from plant-derived building blocks, containing no bisphenols. A Phase 1 Data Gap Analysis is under way with an independent testing and certification body, the first step on the regulatory pathway for food-contact use. The programme was recognised by the 2026 Hill Prize in Physical Sciences, a $500,000 non-dilutive prize awarded jointly to Texas A&M University and Teysha Technologies.
