$500,000 Awarded to Teysha Technologies for BPA Replacement Breakthrough

On Monday, 2nd March in San Antonio, Texas, Teysha Technologies CEO Matthew Stone and Professor Karen Wooley of Texas A&M University were awarded the 2026 Hill Prize in Physical Sciences at the annual TAMEST ceremony, in recognition of their collaborative breakthrough in sustainable polymer chemistry aimed at replacing fossil-derived Bisphenol A (BPA) with biodegradable, plant-based alternatives. They were joined at the ceremony by Dr Ashlee Jahnke and Dr Senthil Kumar Boopathi, whose work has been central to advancing the underlying polymer chemistry.

The Hill Prize, awarded by the Texas Academy of Medicine, Engineering, Science & Technology (TAMEST) in partnership with Lyda Hill Philanthropies, recognises high-impact scientific innovation with strong potential for real-world translation. The award includes USD $500,000 in non-dilutive funding for Teysha Technologies to accelerate scale-up and process development, strengthening the pathway from breakthrough chemistry to commercial deployment.

The recognised work focuses on replacing Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the most widely used industrial chemicals globally. BPA is used extensively in food and beverage can linings, polycarbonate plastics, coatings and consumer packaging. It is classified as an endocrine disruptor and has been shown to leach from materials into food and liquids under certain conditions. Extensive scientific evidence has linked BPA exposure to hormonal interference, developmental and reproductive effects, metabolic disorders, including obesity and diabetes risk, cardiovascular disease, and potential impacts on neurological development. Concerns are particularly acute for infants and pregnant women. Regulatory scrutiny has intensified globally. The European Union has moved toward broad restrictions, and agencies in the United States and Asia continue to reassess exposure thresholds. Major brands are accelerating efforts to eliminate BPA from their supply chains.

Recognition at the Hill Prize level provides independent validation of Teysha’s innovative polymer chemistry underpinning this BPA replacement work and reinforces its commercial relevance amid an accelerating regulatory transition.

This award marks a significant milestone in Teysha’s continued development of scalable, safer alternatives to fossil-derived materials. We will continue to update you on more exciting developments in store for this year.
